Main Points:
Rachel Carson became the author of “Silent Spring” which played a major role in starting an environmental movement. Her main goal was to share her observations to the whole world about her work and soon she became a leader. When writing her book, Carson was dealing with breast cancer and had young children. Regardless of the negative feedback about her book she remained strong and purse to be a spokeswoman for the environmental responsibility. Carson had many dedication to her career and her personal life, being a caregiver and adopting her grandnephew while being unmarried. The next years she dedicated her time for the research for “Silent Spring”, she searched for any who had any information. Her main focus was for a link between breast cancer and pesticides. At the begging of the 1960’s Carson’s medical problems started again, limiting her to her work again. Later after her surgery and rest she continue whit her book, she went to certain book publishers. She argued about that synthetic pesticide DDT where having an effect on the human health, animals and the environment and it will have later on consequences. The book reached the presidents hand and banned the use of the pesticides in the US. She was only present when she felt that it will make the most difference saving her strengths. The Environmental Protection Agency banned DDT, a Clean Water Act was passes and as well as the Endangered Species Act. |
Reflection:
It is interesting to know that a simple book made a huge difference in the US. Rachel Carson had many troubles when writing the book, from being a full time mom, to adopting her grandnephew when her nephew past away, not married and battling with cancer all the time. Through it all Carson became a spokeswomen for the environmental responsibility. She became a leader to everyone and motivated many to make a difference regarding the environment. It is inspiring to know that through all the problems she remained strong, ignore the criticism of why she was writing and continue to work for what she believed was right. When writing she discover that there is a link between cancer and the use of pesticides. Thanks to her book now there is more regulation regarding pesticides, and other environmental problems. Personally now I admire Carson for what she was able to do. I knew that she just wrote the book, but didn’t know the knowledge about all she went through in order to finish it. It is motivational because one that is healthy and has the whole capacity to take action, we stop ourselves thinking that we can’t do it. Regardless of the circumstance Carson was able anyone can be able to participate and take action. |
